WolfpackWOLFPACK UNVEILS NEW LOGO, BRAND IDENTITY

Team Kicking Off 2015 WWCFL Season with New Look

(Winnipeg, Manitoba) – To kick off the upcoming 2015 Western Women’s Canadian Football League season, the North Winnipeg Nomads Wolfpack will be embracing a new brand identity. The previous team name, uniform, and logo had been in use since the team’s inaugural season in 2011.

The Winnipeg Wolfpack will continue to be a very proud member of their parent community football club, the North Winnipeg Nomads, who are an integral and positive part of the fabric of Winnipeg’s North End community.

The logo, created by graphic designer Kristen Lourie, maintains the Wolfpack’s original gold and black colour scheme. To honour the traditional colours of the North Winnipeg Nomads, the Wolfpack will be proudly wearing a newly designed gold and black uniform with a green helmet.

The goal of the project was to develop a new, modern, exciting, and empowering logo which would represent the competitive strength and passion of the Wolfpack program.

A new website – www.winnipegwolfpack.com -- and new social media branding have been released to reflect the new team name and logo.

The new Wolfpack logo will be proudly displayed on all Wolfpack team uniforms, player apparel, and merchandise beginning this season.

DSC_0045February is I Love To Read Month and schools all across Canada have used this campaign to encourage their students to read more.

One way Football Manitoba wanted to get involved was by bringing a few local football stars out to a school and read along with them.

The school that got to hear some stories on Thursday, Feb. 12 was Oakbank Elementary School. The Oakbank region has a brand new football club, formed just last year, called the Sunrise Coyotes. President of the Coyotes, Shandy Walls was on hand to show some support and was in their signature Orange jersey.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bomber and current B.C Lion, Kito Poblah was one of the athletes that read to the kids ranging in age from Kindergarten to Grade 5. He chose to read Robert Munsch's Smelly SocksPoblah had the kids laughing by changing the main characters name from Tina to what the kids wanted to call her, Noodles.

DSC_0034Also former Winnipeg Blue Bomber and current Montreal Alouette, Carl Volny read a story for the kids. He stuck to the Robert Munsch theme and read Down the Drain. Volny had the kids intrigued by getting them to repeat different phrases from the book and asking them questions throughout the story.

After Poblah and Volny finished reading, Principal, Orest Deneka, presented them with a couple awards and allowed them to walk around the school.

The Canadian Football League players got a chance to visit all the classrooms to meet all the kids and sign autographs and take pictures.

We want to think Principal Deneka and all the staff and students at Oakbank Elementary School for allowing us to come and read to everyone. We had such a great time and hope that they had just as much fun as we did.DSC_0056

With the Combine being only one week away, we wanted to show you what you will be doing on the field.

There are 5 different stations that will test you in many different aspects of the game.

They are, 40-yard dash, Bench Press, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump and the 20-yard Shuttle.

40 Yard Dash

40-Yard DashThis is a test of speed and power. From a three-point stance, a player runs 40 yards as fast as he can. Split times are recorded at 10 and 20 yards to measure acceleration. The 10-yard time is especially important for offensive and defensive linesmen because they usually don't run further than that during a play.

Bench Press

The bench press test is a test of upper body strength. Each player must bench press 135/ 185 OR 225 lbs. as many times as they can.  The bench press is the most important for offensive and defensive linemen, running backs and linebackers

Vertical Jump

A test of explosion and power. The player jumps off both feet straight up as high as he can. The vertical jump is most important for receivers and defensive backs.

Broad Jump

Elite PerformanceSimilar to the vertical jump, this is a test of lower body strength, explosion, and power. The broad jump measures how far you can jump, not how high. From a standing position, the player jumps forward off two feet as far as he can. The broad jump is the most important for running backs, linemen, and linebackers.

20-yard Shuttle

Also called the 5-10-5 Shuttle, this is a test of agility including speed, explosion and changing of directions. Technique is also important. Each player will be timed how fast they can go 5 yards laterally, then 10 back in the opposite direction, and finishing 5 yards back to the start line.

There are only a few spots remaining. If interested contact Henryka Ostrow by email at finance@footballmanitoba.com or by phone at 204-925-5902 as soon as possible.

A recent posting on Facebook has created misinformation in regards to player’s eligibility and in particular Bantam grads attending High School Spring Camps. Football Manitoba will provide information of the correct situation based on current WHSFL, MHSAA and Football Manitoba policies.

1. No player can register and play for more than one team in a season. (Football Canada and Football Manitoba)

2. No student can attend a high school spring camp as per MHSAA policy unless that student has completed an enrollment form for that high school and has been accepted. If accepted, that student may attend the Spring Camp. This is particularly important for students in the transition year from grade 8 to 9. (Players are forbidden from sending in multiple application forms and attending several camps)

3. The Spring Camp is considered an auditing situation and attendance at the camp is not considered a signing. The student has no obligation to stay with the high school team. The student is free to register with a community program. (It is noted that there is past practice of community players participating at high school spring camps while having no interest in playing there in the fall. The time is used to build experience. It is also legislated under the Public Schools Act that every student has the right to participate in any offered school activity.)

4. High School practices and registration occurs in August at main training camp. The training camp opening dates are set by the league but usually occur in the third week of August. In order to participate, the accepted student must now have a pending timetable for the fall classes.

In summary:

- A student player attending a high school Spring camp does not affect any status or eligibility to sign with a community team during the MMFA or Midget League registration periods.

- Any statement that a player attending a high school spring camp is not eligible to play community football would be a Club policy and does not reflect the policies of Football Manitoba, The WHSFL or the MHSAA.

Final : Team Canada 25 - Team USA 9

by Corey Weir

Team Canada’s U18 team beat up on Team USA, in the International Bowl Game Series, winning 25-9 on Friday night. This is the second straight year Team Canada bested the American squad. The game was played at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Team USA was the team that jumped out to the early lead, leading by three after the first quarter but that didn’t stop Team Canada from going on to score two touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 14-3 at the half. From there the dominance continued for Canada, scoring 11 second half points en route to a 25-9 final.

Manitoba was well represented having four players on the roster and a coach. The four players included, Tristan Bredin (Anola, MB), Mason Bennett (Winnipeg, MB), Randall Sanderson (Winnipeg, MB) and Zackary Williams (Winnipeg, MB). Coach Chris Bochen, recently a coach with the Winnipeg Rifles, was Offensive Line Coach.

Bredin, defensive lineman for Murdoch McKay High School, was one of the leading tacklers for Team Canada, recording four tackles on the day. Bennett, defensive lineman for Vincent Massey High School, recorded three tackles of his own and also got to the quarterback with a sack.

Sanderson and Williams, both offensive linemen, did and impressive job protecting the quarterback, with no sacks given up in the entire game. As for rushing the ball, Team Canada amassed 133 yards on the ground, thanks to the big guys up front.

Congratulations to the five gentlemen that represented Manitoba and the entire Canadian team on being victorious.
