Football Manitoba welcomes seven teams to national Under-16 event at IGF

WINNIPEG, MB – Canada’s best football players under the age of 16 will be showcased at the 5th Annual Red River Cup, July 6-12 at Investors Group Field. This year’s Red River Cup is the largest in the history of the event, featuring seven teams from across the country.

The 2014 edition of the Red River Cup features Team British Columbia Blue, Team British Columbia Orange, Team Manitoba Black, Team Manitoba Gold, Team Northern Saskatchewan, Team Nova Scotia and Team Southern Saskatchewan. More than 300 players will take part in the Football Manitoba event, which serves to develop players who will eventually play in Football Canada’s Canada Cup, the CIS and the CJFL with the hopes of one day making it to the CFL.

“The Red River Cup is the premier Under-16 football event in Canada,” said Shawn Coates, Executive Director of Football Manitoba. “Fans can see tomorrow’s football stars today. The energy, passion and skill level these athletes show is a treat to watch.”

The tournament will feature two pools: one of four teams, the other with three squads. Each team will play four mini-games over the first two days of competition. Each mini-game consists of two 25-minute halves with running time, except for the last two minutes of each half.

The top two teams in each pool after the first two days of competition will play each other in the Gold Medal Game, Saturday July 12. The second place teams in each pool will play in the Bronze Medal Game. The two medal games will be four 12-minute quarters, as is consistent with most amateur football. The other three sides will play a mini-tournament of three games to determine the final three spots. Football Manitoba thanks its major corporate partners Elite Performance, Heavy Metal Design and Old Dutch Foods for their tremendous support of the Red River Cup.
