Under 18 Football Players of Manitoba,

With the start of Phase 1 of the U18 Provincial Program fast approaching (April 15th, 2014), I would like to take an opportunity to encourage you to register. There are reasons to come out to the program no matter what level of development you feel you are at, and some of these reasons are new to the process.
First and foremost, the Provincial Program is and always has been a great place for players to develop under great coaches while competing against some of the best talent the province has to offer. Individual skills, one on one competition, and passing/running/12-on-12 competition sessions with an emphasis on coaching are a large part of the Phase 1 process. Coming out to the program will make you better, your home program better and the province better.

For players with aspirations beyond High School and Midget Football, the U18 Provincial Program is the only opportunity for players to compete in the Canada Cup. This comes with its own perks. It is a chance to represent your province and yourself at the national level. It also affords players in the tournament a variety of opportunities to be recruited and identified. All major CIS universities have scouts/coaches attend the games and practices in order to identify and scout players. One on one conversations between U18 players and these scouts/coaches often occur at practice sites.
There is also an opportunity for players to compete at the international level as well. The Under 18 Team Canada is selected from players who participated in the Canada Cup. Many players who play for the Under 19 team were also initially identified by their play in the tournament. In fact, all Manitoba players who are currently with a Team Canada program are former members of Team Manitoba.
New to the process this year is the changed format of the Blue and Gold Classic. This year, only approximately 60 players will be selected from Phase 1 to compete in the Blue and Gold game. These elite athletes will represent Team Gold. They will be competing against an All-Manitoba team comprised of players selected from the WHSFL Senior Bowl and the Midget League All-Star list. That means that as a U18 Provincial player you will have the chance to play against your former teammates from this season in direct competition.

Along with this new and exciting format are some other recent changes to the program. Many of you received a brochure from Football Manitoba detailing the selection process. Most of that brochure (available at footballmanitoba.com) is correct with the exception of two major factors:
1) Phase 1 will begin April 15th with a passing emphasis practice. All practices prior to that have been cancelled.
2) Phase 1 will cost $225 instead of $400 to reflect these cancelled workouts.
If you cannot attend a practice for whatever reason, please contact me directly at u18tobaheadcoach@gmail.com. These practices are both developmental and evaluative as an elite program. The U18 coaches will be selecting players based primarily on their performance at these practices. It is important for players to spend the upcoming months developing themselves physically, in the gym and on the track.
Registration for the program will be open until March 28th, 2014  but we encourage you to register as soon as possible. Contact Football Manitoba directly at 204-925-5902 and ask for Henryka or in person at 145 Pacific Ave in Winnipeg. If you have any questions or concerns, including financial concerns, please contact either the program’s general manager Steve Hoel at u18gmtoba@gmail.com or myself. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you,
Dan Washnuk
U18 Team Manitoba Head Coach
